Since 2014, Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens and the National Park Service have partnered to provide spring break, summer, and other out-of-school time camps (previously named NatureFest) to the children and families in our Ward 7 neighborhood. These camps are neighborhood and park-based programs that provides safe, high-quality programming when parents and caregivers need it most.
Summer camp at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens fosters a connection to nature, a sense of belonging, and inspires curiosity about the local watershed and its diverse array of plants and animals. During this three week camp programs, students (and families) explore and celebrate the park through hands-on learning stations and projects. Several neighborhood parents and local teachers, along with local teens, help lead activities for groups of campers throughout the week, allowing the students the opportunity to experience the park and nature through familiar eyes.
Where decades of disinvestment and infrastructure isolation have left many of these residents behind, Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is investing deeply in efforts to fill immediate community needs for safe, high-quality programming, as well as cultivate local champions and passionate stewards of this unique national park.
